One of the best ways to combat discrimination and racism is by creating intergroup friendships. However, there are not enough spaces that are created to foster these types of relationships. The Intergroup Friendship Circle will be a safe space for students to share their ideas freely and in a way that respects the views of others. This initiative aims to create such a space at the University of Regina and will give our students the opportunity to form friendships across different cultural groups on campus. The Intergroup Friendship Circle will cover a variety of topics that are related to students and to their role in society, there will also be fun and engaging activities for students to participate in.

The discussions will be facilitated by the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility Advocate at the University of Regina Students’ Union. There will also be times when co-facilitators will be brought in to share their expert knowledge on certain topics. While the discussions are expected to be engaging and will draw people in, the goal is to provide a space for students from different cultural backgrounds to talk to each other about issues that impact them and our world and, hope that they will realize through dialogue that regardless of our differences, we are at our core all the same.

Our world has many grave problems and those problems will only be solved through deepening cross-cultural understanding, and this initiative is hoping to be a positive step in that direction.
